A quick Google of the phrase, “A Diamond In The Rough” produces the following top 3 explanations:
a person who is generally of good character but lacks manners, education, or style…
someone (or something) that has hidden exceptional characteristics and/or future potential, but currently lacks the final touches that would make them (or it) truly stand out from the crowd…
requires the services of an expert to bring out the brilliance but in contrast if you want to be that brilliant stone, you would have to put in a lot of work to make it a reality…
Hmmm. Doesn’t exactly sound like a compliment, does it? One might call this a, “Backhanded Compliment” – or an insult disguised as praise.
So, when browsing through hundreds of online reviews for vacation rental properties yesterday (none of them ours), I was somewhat disconcerted to see the exact same phrase (“A diamond in the rough”) used over and over by different reviewers (guests) for different properties (stays). OMG (Oh My Guest)! This is not a compliment, Property Owners! Wake Up! These are live comments from live guests posted in response to real time stays at properties. They are not comments based on perception from online listing photos.
